General Staff Building
Close
This is the Palace square flanked by the Hermitage and the General Staff Building. It was a central point for the 2006 VE Day
Celebrations and there were endless amounts of personnel in military uniforms.
The building was comissioned in 1819 by Alexander I and incorporated the first Arch to celebrate the victories over Napoleon. It is
neo-classical and was built to balance out the Winter Palace (off-shot to the left). It is thought that Roman victories were the
inspiration for the design and the six-horsed chariot adorning the arch.
