The Kremlin South Tower - Moscow
Close
Kremlin is Russian for Citadel and most cities have one. It is the walled stronghold at the center of a city and is usually
where the castle was situated and ruler of the city lived. The Kremlin in Moscow is now open to the public and holds Government
offices, the Presidential Residences, several impressive catherdrals, the arsenal and several well maintained gardens.
The original Kremlin was foundered in 1147 by Prince Yury Dolgoruky, as a wooden fort to defend the hill in lies on today. As the
fortress evolved so the city of Moscow developed around it. It was given the title of 'Kremlin' in 1331.
The thought of the Kremlin inspires thoughts of Cold War scheming and Soviet power emenating from its stone heart. However the
citadel and surrounding buildings are regal, beautiful and fine examples of Russian and European Architecture. It has always been
a palace for Tsars and Emperors and demonstrates a softer and more pious touch to the imposing Red Walls that surround it.
